Introduction to Facebook Engagement
“Another Facebook update and my business might just die!”
That’s what many people are thinking every time Facebook’s algorithms change.
Would you like to beat the algorithms and constant updates?
In this guide, I’m going to explain how some simple rules of engagement can keep your content in the limelight no matter what happens.
The Facebook algorithm uses very practical logic to determine what content worth showing to more people. Facebook looks at how many people interact with your post, like, comment, and share it – and how fast this activity happens from the time you posted.
So, if you want to get more engagement on Facebook posts…
Get as much activity on your post as fast as possible.
It’s that simple.
In this guide I’ll show you…
- The 4 best ways to attract and engage an audience
- How to create engagement on your post when it has none
- How to make your posts go viral
- How to drive quality traffic to your website organically
Asking Questions the Right Way
People ask questions all the time on Facebook. Asking a question is a well known way to get massive engagement on facebook posts. But most people still struggle to get engagement when they ask questions. And the reason is…
Most people ask questions that are hard to answer.
What do I mean?
Here is an example of a HARD question.
What does your morning routine look like?
This question is clearly asking too much from the reader.
- Who wants to write out their morning routine? We all have better things to do than write a long answer to a dumb question.
- Most people are self conscious and will give up halfway through their response anyway
This question puts way too much at risk for the reader. It takes their time, their mental effort, and it could make them look stupid to ALL of their friends.
Here is an example of an EASY question
What’s one thing you do every morning?
Someone can easily respond to this question and say something like
“Work out” or “Make a smoothie”
This answer required very little work and left nothing to be self-conscious about.
This question appeals to both the “self-conscious” and “non self-conscious people,” which means more engagement and comments, FASTER!
Examples of other questions
- As you may have seen, Facebook polls always do well because polls make answering questions easy. A reader can select an answer without creating one.
- Ask questions and tell your audience what to answer. An example would look like this. Who’s wants to go out tonight? Comment “let’s go!” In this question there is only one answer! Another easy way to get engagement.
Here’s a quick engagement question checklist.
- Make sure that you are clear and to the point
- Make sure your question is easy to answer
- Make sure your question doesn’t make people feel insecure
And you’ll get more engagement on your posts.
Giving Value to Your Peers
If you produce quality content, with real value, then people begin to trust you. When people trust you, they tend to cheer you on. When people cheer you on, you’re getting engagement.
So…
Give away VALUE to your audience.
Create content that can help others succeed in their business. In marketing, giving value could mean describing your new sales funnel, giving a tip, or sharing data.
In real estate, value could be updating people on the local market and available inventory, sharing home-buying tips, or giving away a house appraisal checklist.
When you know your audience, you know how to deliver value.
Focus on creating content that is packed with value.
For example:
“Want to know how to get people to your events with social media? Here are 5 ways I growth hacked my events on Facebook.”
You can also…
- Share articles related to your industry and add your own opinion.
- Give people encouragement and motivation
- Give away guides and data
Updating Your Following
Posting updates on your life or business is a great way to increase engagement on FB.
But posting updates like this:
“Just updated our Website, check it out when you can!”
Doesn’t work.
When you’re giving people updates, add some elements of a good story. Show your struggle, show your risk, show your payoff, and show your gratitude to whoever helped you along the way.
You can tag people on your team in the post (Encourage that engagement right?!)
Or tag people that influenced you and helped you get to where you are.
Ex: Writers, Content Creators, Mentors, Bosses etc.
Don’t just tell people WHAT happened; tell them WHY it happened or HOW it happened. Include people that contributed to your success and you’ll get engagement on your post.
Tell Stories People Can Relate To
If you look at LinkedIn and Facebook, you’ll see a lot of storytellers.
They use the same storytelling format as some of the greatest movies do. The main character of any good story usually starts off in a good place, then experiences some sort of difficulty, learns a lesson, and then ends up better than they started.
When you tell stories, you can create a real connection with your audience. Many people in business have similar stories about the hardships of starting or running a company. Everyone loves when someone can beat the odds.
By telling your story, you give thousands of other people hope or the ability to relate to you. Some might even challenge you, but all of this emotion creates engagement.
Telling stories might be one of the most effective ways to engage an audience on social media.
Make your story INTERESTING
- Give enough details, but not too many
- Be clear about your message / lesson learned
- Ask your audience a question in relation to the story
And you’ll get engagement you want.
Do a little research on storytelling and copywriting to sharpen your skills. Formatting and sentence structure can help you deliver your message clearly. Additionally, consider the fact that the average American reads at a 7th – 8th grade level.
Make your stories easy to read and understand!
Bonus: Content That Works For Engagement
We manage Facebook pages with millions of likes, so we’re testing engagement on facebook posts all of the time. One of our pages, which is currently at 37 million likes, gains huge engagement from what we call “Quote Images”
Memes
We’ve all seen them, but surprisingly the best performing quote images / memes consist of a black background with a quote in white text. They work even better if the text has a call to action for engagement.
We’ve tested videos, slideshows, text posts, image posts, and almost every other style of posting you can think of.
A black background with white text quotes always works the best.
Reminder: Almost any quote posted in this style does well. But, using a quote or saying that connects with your audience will get you the most engagement.
Always think of your audience.
Create Engagement On Facebook Posts When There is None
1) Create an “engaging / good” post.
Gets 2 likes within 15 minutes.
Previously, I wrote about incentivizing people to like or comment on a post.
You can try that.
I also mentioned engagement strategies that many people are using.
Things like asking questions, giving updates, telling stories etc.
You can try that too!
The point is…
You can force a good post to go viral.
2) Engage
When you have two likes on a post, mention them in a comment.
Ex: “Thanks for the love! @whoever liked the post @whoever liked the post”
The two people who liked your post will get a notification and respond to your comment.
They’ll something like, “No problem”
Once they comment, like their comment immediately!
Then respond to their comment with your own comment.
Creating “engagement” like this will help get you more exposure
Do you see what’s happening?
You are CREATING engagement which = EXPOSURE, which is the fastest way to go viral.
Repeat this process with the new likes and ALWAYS like and respond to anyone’s comments.
Create as much engagement as you can!
Teaming Up With Friends
Here’s how you can GUARANTEE initial engagement and catapult your post into virality.
1) Get a group of friends who will like your post as soon as you post it.
2) Figure out a way to alert your friends when you’re posting.
Many people create “PODS” on Telegram, but you can do the same thing with groups texts, fb group messages, etc.
3) Get 10 + friends to like your post within the first 5 minutes of posting
4) Use the initial engagement strategy in combination with the new strategy and you’ll pretty much guarantee that your post will go viral in a Facebook group, page, or profile.
Increase engagement, increase your reach.

Posting Correctly and Driving Traffic
Here’s a quick engagement and traffic strategy you can use today!
Make an ANNOUNCEMENT post about your event, product, or service.
Offer a discount or coupon to anyone who comments on the post.
Make sure you do not add a link in the original description.
Add all of your links in the first comment of the post. Facebook limits the reach on posts that have links.
An example post might look like this…
” 💥 We’re hosting a Facebook Marketing Mastermind event on Wednesday, March 28th at 1pm. 💥 The event will be hosted at WeWork in Playa Vista. Details linked in the first comment (see below)
💵 For a 50% discount, COMMENT “I’m in” and I’ll send a discount for the first 5 comments. 💵 “
Make sure you add a picture with details of the event.
Your post should be catchy, clear, and to the point.
Make sure you have a call to action.
Do what you can to capture attention, that includes using emojis.
+ Try and fit your offer in the first few lines of text, so everyone can see it!
Pro Tip: People pay attention to times and dates. Use times and dates to catch someone’s eye and generate interest in the post.
So if you haven’t figured it out already, you can incentivize people to make comments.
Limiting the number of discount codes to the first 5 comments makes people act faster.
They leave a comment and claim the offer,
Which helps the post get more engagement, faster.
The faster the engagement happens, the better chance you have to go viral.
Side note: There are many ways to speed up engagement on facebook posts in a group. Get creative and you’ll discover your own ways.
Here’s the best part:
Other viewers see all the likes, comments, and shares
They see people are excited
They realize they want what your offering
And purchase at full price.
It’s a FOMO thing.
If you execute this strategy correctly, your post will go viral in groups, profiles, and pages and drive real traffic and sales.
Conclusion
Now you are fully equipped to get massive engagement! Not only can you leverage your personal profile, but you can access and leverage Facebook groups as well. And with the right strategy and engagement techniques, you’ll be able to command the attention of your target audience every single day.
